The Diesel Reference Fuel market uses products, such as Diesel Secondary Reference Fuels, that require extensive testing to determine their Cetane Numbers. The testing is required so that CFR cetane engine users can be assured of test results in which they can have full confidence.
On June 2, 2014, Haltermann introduced two (2) additional products to its family of Reference Fuel Products: Secondary Reference Diesel Fuel T-27 and Secondary Reference Diesel Fuel U-20.
The products were approved by ASTM SUBCOMMITTEE D02.01 SECTION E ON REFERENCE FUELS, DIESEL NATIONAL EXCHANGE GROUP (NEG), who completed the analysis to determine the Cetane Number of the fuels.
For octane measurement, Primary Reference Fuel products used in CFR engines are basically pure molecules (>99.75% purity) such as PRF Grade iso-octane and PRF grade n-heptane. These products do not have to be evaluated by a round-robin analysis as, by definition, they produce the required octane measurements in the engines if their purity meets the ASTM requirements defined by ASTM D2699 and D2700.
For cetane measurement, CFR cetane engine users utilize Secondary Reference Diesel Fuels that are not pure molecules. Secondary Fuels are used due to the fact that one of the molecules used as a Primary Cetane Diesel Fuel, Hepta-MethylNonane or HMN, is prohibitively expensive. Since the Secondary Fuels are not pure molecules, they can be manufactured more economically, but their cetane numbers must be determined by round-robin testing by the Diesel National Exchange group. This process is time consuming and does add cost.
Ideally, the industry would be well served if a more cost effective single molecule product could be used as a Primary Diesel Reference Fuel to replace the current Secondary Reference Fuel.
That day is on the horizon thanks to the development work being conducted at Haltermann Solutions. Haltermann has identified a new molecule for this application, Penta-MethylHeptane or PMH. This product is showing great promise as a potential Primary Reference Fuel in initial tests. Given Haltermann’s long expertise in reaction and distillation chemistry, we have been able to manufacture this molecule with exceptional purity. We are currently working with the ASTM and hope to commission a study with the NEG to determine the cetane number for this product.
Our hope is that this product will eventually lead to the industry having viable, economical Primary Reference Diesel Fuels, PMH and normal cetane and eliminate the need for certifying new batches of Secondary Reference Diesel Fuels every 2 to 3 years.
It’s innovations like this that will lead the industry and position Haltermann to serve the specialty fuels market and its customers for years to come.
