Innovating For The Future

The Diesel Reference Fuel market uses products, such as Diesel Secondary Reference Fuels, that require extensive testing to determine their Cetane Numbers. The testing is required so that CFR cetane engine users can be assured of test results in which they can have full confidence.

On June 2, 2014, Haltermann introduced two (2) additional products to its family of Reference Fuel Products: Secondary Reference Diesel Fuel T-27 and Secondary Reference Diesel Fuel U-20.

The products were approved by ASTM SUBCOMMITTEE D02.01 SECTION E ON REFERENCE FUELS, DIESEL NATIONAL EXCHANGE GROUP (NEG), who completed the analysis to determine the Cetane Number of the fuels.

For octane measurement, Primary Reference Fuel products used in CFR engines are basically pure molecules (>99.75% purity) such as PRF Grade iso-octane and PRF grade n-heptane. These products do not have to be evaluated by a round-robin analysis as, by definition, they produce the required octane measurements in the engines if their purity meets the ASTM requirements defined by ASTM D2699 and D2700.

For cetane measurement, CFR cetane engine users utilize Secondary Reference Diesel Fuels that are not pure molecules. Secondary Fuels are used due to the fact that one of the molecules used as a Primary Cetane Diesel Fuel, Hepta-MethylNonane or HMN, is prohibitively expensive. Since the Secondary Fuels are not pure molecules, they can be manufactured more economically, but their cetane numbers must be determined by round-robin testing by the Diesel National Exchange group. This process is time consuming and does add cost.

Ideally, the industry would be well served if a more cost effective single molecule product could be used as a Primary Diesel Reference Fuel to replace the current Secondary Reference Fuel.

That day is on the horizon thanks to the development work being conducted at Haltermann Solutions. Haltermann has identified a new molecule for this application, Penta-MethylHeptane or PMH. This product is showing great promise as a potential Primary Reference Fuel in initial tests. Given Haltermann’s long expertise in reaction and distillation chemistry, we have been able to manufacture this molecule with exceptional purity. We are currently working with the ASTM and hope to commission a study with the NEG to determine the cetane number for this product.

Our hope is that this product will eventually lead to the industry having viable, economical Primary Reference Diesel Fuels, PMH and normal cetane and eliminate the need for certifying new batches of Secondary Reference Diesel Fuels every 2 to 3 years.

It’s innovations like this that will lead the industry and position Haltermann to serve the specialty fuels market and its customers for years to come.

GETTING READY FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS

Haltermann Solutions celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013. This is a remarkable accomplishment for any company as statistics show that less than 25% of businesses survive 20 years. I am proud of all the individuals at Haltermann that contributed to this accomplishment. Their dedication to developing and manufacturing exceptional quality, specialty fuels while focusing on serving the customer has been a model that has endured the test of time. We can’t look back and rest on our laurels however. The specialty fuel needs of our customers is constantly changing and becoming ever more challenging. We know that we must continually invest in all aspects of our business to make sure we are prepared for the NEXT 50 years. There are many examples, but I’ll just highlight one of these areas.

Haltermann Solutions expands its Laboratory Testing Capabilities

Haltermann Solutions recently completed accreditation to the ISO 17025-2005 Standard. The accreditation, awarded by the American Association of Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), was received for several analytical procedures performed at the Houston Lab, as well as its two satellite production facilities (located in Nixon, TX and Hamtramck, MI). While accreditation to the ISO 17025 Standard is voluntary, we recognize the value of the accreditation for various reasons. First and foremost, our customers’ asked for it. The increasing complexities involved with the development and production of Test and Reference fuels is becoming ever more demanding. We chose to meet these complexities and challenges head-on in an effort to address our customers’ needs and to remain the leader in the Test and Reference fuel industry in North America. Demonstrated proficiencies as a result of the evaluation performed by A2LA include:

Technical competency when performing calibrations
Precise and accurate data are applied during developmental efforts
Precise and accurate data are reported on finished product certification – (CofA’s).

This effort represents a good start, but Haltermann Solutions is not standing still. Recent developments have paved the way for us to expand our list of accredited offerings. Haltermann Solutions’ recently completed capital project, a new physical properties Lab in Houston, TX, will facilitate this expansion and solidify Haltermann Solutions as the leader in the Test and Reference Fuel industry for the next 50 years.

As our accredited list of analytical tests expands, we will continue to evaluate our technical capabilities, allowing us to enhance and increase those capabilities to meet our Customers’ needs. What will the next 50 years look like? Time will tell, but rest assured that we are committed and looking forward to meeting the increasing complexities and challenges that lie ahead.

Haltermann Solutions…….what being “relational” means to us!

I’d like to dedicate this issue to a discussion about the people at Haltermann Solutions. To be sure, Haltermann is the leading manufacturer of automotive test and reference fuels in North America; but this is only part of the story.

Manufacturing high quality specialty fuels is only WHAT we do.

HOW we accomplish this plays an equally important part of our success and what separates Haltermann from other fuel suppliers now for over 50 years.

We know that the difference between just supplying a specialty fuel and having a loyal, extremely satisfied customer can be as simple as the human and relational touches Haltermann employees make along the way while fulfilling a transaction.

What does “relational” mean?

To Jenny, leader of our customer service team, it may mean working with customer requirements to meet a tight delivery schedule.

To Elisha, national account manager for automotive fuels, it may mean traveling to a customer’s location and handing out Haltermann donated gift cards to their employees who suffered devastating losses after a tornado ravaged their town.

To Josh, manager national accounts for aerospace, it may mean traveling to a major aerospace company to present a new supply chain strategy that will result in significant savings for the customer.

To Mike, our technical service specialist, it may mean helping a customer develop fuel specifications after their initial question was, “I’m conducting a project. What kind of fuel do I need?”

To Mark, our director of manufacturing and supply chain, it may mean contacting a customer and telling them that we modified a process to head off a problem he sees coming that they aren’t even aware of yet.

To Joel, a fuel formulation specialist, what does “relational” mean? Well, after being with our company for 45 years and knowing all the major players in the business, that may well be the definition of “relational”.

It’s folks like these, along with the rest of our employees, who make up the very soul of Haltermann Solutions.

I believe this is what has separated us from the rest of the pack for the past 50 years and will continue to do so.

I am immensely proud of my association with such a fine group of individuals who truly make Haltermann Solutions what it is today.

April President’s Corner!

Haltermann Solutions is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013. Over the years Haltermann has amassed a wealth of experience and knowledge when it comes to producing Test and Reference Fuels, Primary Reference Fuels, High Purity hydrocarbon molecules and other highly specialized fuels. Historically Haltermann’s analytical facilities have served us well. However with the ever increasing complexity and number of specialty fuel requests, it is clear that our existing facilities will not be sufficient to meet the demands for the coming decades. We realized the need for a new state of the art fuel development lab.

In December 2012, a capital project was approved and construction began on a new laboratory for Haltermann Solutions. We expect the facility to be completed and in operation by April 2013. The new facility will enable Haltermann to move through the fuel development process more quickly and efficiently. Once in full operation the new lab will also give us the opportunity to conduct collaborative R&D with customers. As the lab grows, so will the list of test methods having ISO 17025 accreditation which is so important to our automotive customers.

We may have 50 years under our belt but we are nowhere near done evolving. We’re just getting prepared for the next 50.

Haltermann Solutions is proud to be celebrating our 50th year of manufacturing and selling test and reference fuels. Much of Haltermann’s 50 year history has been centered in the manufacturing of automotive test fuels. However, over the years, other users have recognized that the same expertise needed to make automotive test and reference fuels could be utilized to make specialty fuels for the needs of their markets and applications. This cumulative expertise has led to Haltermann to make aviation, aerospace, marine and small engine specialty fuels in addition to our automotive fuel offerings.

The following lists just a few of the many non-conventional examples of recent fuel developments from Haltermann:

Haltermann has developed a high performance ethanol–free, pre-mix (oil/gas) fuel with exceptional stability for Stihl which they have branded as Motomix. The specification for this product was developed by Stihl specifically for use in their power equipment. The fuel delivers the desired equipment performance while preventing the fuel related problems common with power equipment.

Haltermann developed a rocket propellant that’s used in today’s kerosene/liquid oxygen fueled space vehicles including the Atlas V manufactured by United Launch Alliance (ULA), the Falcon 9 manufactured by SpaceX and the launch vehicle being manufactured by Virgin Galactic. In fact, we are proud to say that Haltermann fuel was used in SpaceX’s Falcon 9 launch vehicle which propelled their Dragon spacecraft to orbit which then subsequently docked with the International Space Station. What comes next? Haltermann is developing higher specific impulse fuels for even better performance for tomorrow’s launch vehicles.

Haltermann Solutions just introduced a family of ultra-high purity Primary Reference Fuels (PRF) that are used in the analytical CFR test engines used to measure octane values of gasoline.  This offering includes PRF grade iso-octane, n-heptane, toluene and No. 80 octane blend. Haltermann was able to manufacture these fuels due to world class distillation capabilities of its sister division.

Haltermann manufactures a unique bio-butanol fuel for the Dyson Racing team. Dyson participates in the American LeMans racing series. The series promotes the use of “green” fuels by its race teams. Using Haltermann’s bio-butanol fuel, Dyson placed first in the 2011 race season.

The 50 years of experience has also been found to be essential when developing the demanding and complex automotive fuels for our immediate future. For example, the new proposed EPA Tier III fuels incorporate compositional specifications in addition to distillation profile requirements and other more typical properties. Haltermann is not only capable of manufacturing fuels to these proposed specifications but has also been successful in making the new CARB LEV III fuels.

Haltermann 50 Year Anniversary Series

2013 is a historic year for Haltermann Solutions as it marks our 50th year of formulating, manufacturing and supplying high quality, specialty test fuels. Over this period, Haltermann has amassed a wealth of experience and expertise in this field. In its early days, Haltermann sold specialty fuels into the automotive market. As time passed, other industries recognized Haltermann’s expertise and they also turned to Haltermann for their specialty fuels. Today, Haltermann provides fuels not only for the automotive and heavy duty markets but also the small engine, racing, marine, aviation, aerospace and Primary Reference Fuels (PRF) markets.

I am proud to be associated with the many talented people here at Haltermann. They share a passion for this company, technical excellence and exceptional customer service. Some have even been in our business for over 40 years.

Haltermann Solutions has had a much storied history. While their name has changed multiple times, having had many owners, their focus and growing expertise of providing the highest quality specialty test fuels to the automotive and other markets has remained the same.

During the mid-1950’s, Paul N. Howell founded a small crude oil refinery in San Antonio, Texas which he named Howell Hydrocarbons. The small refinery manufactured a variety of commercial gasoline and diesel products. During their early years, Southwest Research, Inc., a San Antonio-based, nationally recognized research organization, asked Howell if they could make a special diesel blend for a test they were running. Howell saw need for such fuels elsewhere in the industry and, in 1963, Howell started actively selling and marketing automotive specialty test fuels. Howell left a legacy that resulted in a test fuels business that has now spanned 50 years. The evolution to Haltermann Solutions was not yet completed. Since much of their business was in the Houston area, Howell moved their operations to Sheldon Road in Channelview, Texas in 1991. In 1997, Bob Gower, a former executive of Lyondell, purchased Howell Hydrocarbons and ran the newly formed company, Specified Fuels and Chemicals. In 2000, Ascot, a UK-based chemical company, purchased Specified Fuels and Chemicals. They already had a German-based specialty fuels business by the name of Haltermann Products, which they combined with Specified Fuels, resulting in the world’s largest specialty test fuels business. The name of the global fuels business became Haltermann Products. Haltermann Solutions was still not yet done evolving. In 2001, The Dow Chemical Company purchased Ascot. Dow kept the test fuels business and continued to operate it as Haltermann Products. Dow brought many needed disciplines to Haltermann including safety, supply chain and operational excellence, as well as commercial discipline. That helped it to weather the economic downturn that plagued the late 2000’s which lead to bankruptcies of 2 of the 3 “Big Three” US auto manufacturers.

In 2008, the North American and German Haltermann specialty fuels businesses again separated. The Dow Chemical Company divested the North American Haltermann operations to Monument Chemicals. Dow kept the European Haltermann operations and continued to operate it as Haltermann Products. Monument operates this newly acquired North American entity as Haltermann Products, a division of Johann Haltermann, Ltd.

The acquisition by Monument yielded great benefits to the North American test fuels business and its customers. Haltermann kept the large company disciplines so important to efficient, cost effective and safe operations while shedding the large corporation bureaucracy, enabling it to be highly agile and responsive to customers’ needs. The evolution was nearly complete. In 2010, Haltermann Products Test and Reference Fuels, to provide differentiation from the German test fuels entity and to have a name more fitting to its business purpose, re-branded itself as Haltermann Solutions, which is the name it conducts business as today.

The evolution of Haltermann is not finished yet, nor will we ever be.

Over the next few months we will take the time to share with you how Haltermann is preparing for our future. The past 50 years of experience has served us well as it has resulted in ever-improving formulation and blending capability so we can better serve the markets and customers needing custom made test fuels. We hope to continue this tradition for the next 50.

Recent Quality initiatives at Haltermann Solutions!

This month, I have some exciting news to share with all of our customers regarding recent Quality initiatives at Haltermann Solutions.

In recent years, our automotive customers have regularly stressed the importance of ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation at our facilities, and we listened.

I am now pleased to announce that Haltermann has just received ISO/IEC 17025:2005 for specific test methods conducted at its headquarters lab in Houston, TX, and labs at its manufacturing facilities at Nixon, TX and Hamtramck, MI. I want to congratulate Mark Overaker, Director of Manufacturing and Supply Chain and Ken Smith, Quality Leader for this important accomplishment. This accreditation complements our ISO 9001 accreditation that we received in 2011. You will find convenient links to these certificates on our website.

We all understand that Quality, like this accreditation, is not a destination but an ongoing journey of continuous improvement.

Product Inovation

Our focus this month is on product innovation.

Haltermann Solutions is excited to introduce two new ultra-high purity Primary Reference Fuel products; PRF grade Iso-octane and PRF grade Toluene to this market segment. These products are currently in-stock in both 55 gallon drum and 5 gallon pail quantities. This introduction demonstrates Haltermann’s world-class custom chemical processing capabilities and continued focus on innovation. These products now offer our customers additional choices when considering products for their high purity reference fuel needs.

These products were extensively tested by multiple laboratories to make sure their purity and performance met industry specifications and expectations so customers can consider these products with confidence. Dr. Indresh Mathur, our Director of Research, has summarized the results of our Primary Reference Fuel testing in this month’s Tech Corner.

We are also excited to announce that we are teaming up with Compass-Instruments who will also be representing our PRF line of products in the market place. Compass and their representatives bring a high level of service and valuable expertise on the use of these reference products in CFR octane engines.

Watch for additional Primary Reference Fuel innovations from Haltermann Solutions. Early in the 3rd Quarter of this year we plan to add high-purity n-Heptane to our family of Primary Reference Fuel products. Blends and other Reference Fuels will follow.

Another example of Haltermann innovation comes with the introduction of Stihl Motomix, a premix fuel (oil and gas) for small-engine power equipment. The effort combined a unique fuel specification developed by Stihl and unsurpassed formulation expertise provided by Haltermann resulting a truly unique ethanol and aromatic-free fuel that provides customer convenience, exceptional equipment performance and outstanding fuel stability. The product is available at Stihl dealers nationwide.

Well, 2011 is finally upon us. At Haltermann Solutions, we are approaching this New Year with both excitement and anticipation.  2011 will be a year filled with both challenges and opportunities as we endeavor to provide exceptional levels of quality, service and creativity in finding Solutions for our customers. Be sure to check back to our website regularly throughout the year for exciting announcements from Haltermann.

First, Haltermann Solutions is excited to announce the introduction of a Haltermann Bio-Butanol fuel, recently developed for use in the automotive racing market. The fuel has been approved for use by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) in the American LeMans race series. The fuel is being used by Dyson Racing. Their car utilizes a 2.0 liter, four-cylinder in-line turbocharged engine which is designed to generate in excess of 500 HP. Building on their successful partnership with Mazda, AER (Advanced Engine Research) built this all-new version of the MZR-R race-winning engine that represents the state of the art in turbocharged engine technology. The engine operates exceptionally well on the Haltermann made bio-butanol fuel. The 2011 American LeMans race season will be underway soon with the first race of the season at the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida.
